Investigate the Unknown

With face to face gaming prohibited due to COVID-19, it was time to have a solo game of something. I settled for a game of Star Trek: Attack Wing and I picked out one of the solo scenarios.

This scenario is inspired by the opening scenes of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the Klingon attack on V'ger as it traverses through Klingon space.

For this scenario, I have 100 Squadron Points allocated to me. The points must be used across 3 Klingon ships, of which one must be a K'Tinga class. The ships and associated cards are displayed below. Unusually for Klingons, I decided to go with a more defensive upgrades, as once the initial attack has been carried out, I would need to get my ships out of the play area fast.

The mission was simple, to investigate the anomaly by firing Photon Torpedoes at it!

IKS Kronos One (K'tinga class)

I went for this ship as it removes 1 attack die from an attacking ship. Captain Barak would ensure that my initial Photon Torpedo attack had a greater chance of success.

IKS Koraga (K'vort class)

Picked this ship because of its hull strength and the bonus it gains from being cloaked. Worf could help with the defence as well.
Chang's Bird of Prey (B'rel class)

Picked this ship due to ability to fire whilst cloaked and Gorkon & Alexander would help its longevity.

My Klingon Attack Wing

The mysterious Anomaly

First Turn

The first turn was spent approaching in attack formation.

Second Turn
As my ships approached the target, I started to space them apart. This would allow the bigger ships more room for manoeuvrability on the retreat.

The ships finally entered into attack range.

Target locks are placed
Having established their respective 'Target Locks', it was now time for the Klingon ships to fire their Photon Torpedoes at the anomaly and gain those all important Mission tokens.

The ships decloaked. Firing commenced and all 3 ships managed to inflict hits and as a result, gain those all important mission tokens. Next up was the hard bit - getting my ships out of the play area.

Having fired on it, the Anomaly was now free to return fire.

Oops!

The Anomaly targetted the 2 nearest ships - Chang's Bird of Prey and the IKS Koraga. Despite being cloaked, Chang's Bird of Prey exploded under an onslaught of hits.

The IKS Koraga was hit and lost all its active shields. Without those it could no longer cloak.

Chang's Bird of Prey explodes!

Both my remaining ships did 'about turn' manoeuvres and suffered 'Auxiliary Power' tokens for the reward. As a result, no actions could be taken.

IKS Kronos One escaping the Anomaly
IKS Koraga limps away

For some reason, the hits favoured the Koraga. In true Star Trek style, both its Navigator and Helmsman were effected by hits.

"Today is a good day to die!"

Nearing the exit point, both ships suffered more hits. The Koraga hanging on by a thread.

Although heavily damaged, the IKS Kronos One managed to leave the playing area, leaving the IKS Koraga as the only available target.

One last hit from the Anomaly obliterated the Koraga and her brave crew headed for Sto'vo'kor!

The Koraga explodes!!!
A marginal success for the Empire, with one badly damaged ship surviving this encounter.
