The Beast in the Woods

Image
The deputy shifted his weight as the black government sedan rolled to a stop at the edge of the dirt road, headlights cutting through the mist around the old Montgomery Estate. A tall, sharply dressed man stepped out first. A woman followed - red hair, structured bob, oversized 90s suit. They approached with steady confidence. “Agent Davids, FBI,” the man said, flashing a badge.   “Agent Gillian,” the woman added. The deputy nodded. “Something’s not right out here. Lights, chanting… a smell I can’t explain.” “Occult signs?” Gillian murmured.   “Possibly,” Davids replied. “Show us.” They headed into the silent woods - too silent - until a grinding, wheezing noise froze them in place. They reached a clearing. A blue police box stood there. Beside it: a man in a tweed jacket and bow tie, and a woman with wild blonde curls in a white leather jacket and boots. “I definitely packed a fez,” the man muttered.   “You always say that,” the woman replied. “Hands where...

The Slow Train from the Far East

The wind howls through the dust-choked streets of Lester’s Gulch , rattling loose shutters and rolling tumbleweed past abandoned storefronts. Then, with a wheezing groan, a blue police box materialises in the centre of town. The door swings open. “Wicked!” cries Ace , leaning out into the blazing sun. “Looks like we’re in the Wild West, Professor!” Behind her, the  Seventh Doctor adjusted his hat and peered over her shoulder. “American Wild West, late nineteenth century by the look of it… though something’s not quite right.” Ace grins. “What is it?” The Doctor’s eyes narrow. “What do you notice?” She scans the street again. Her smile fades. “It’s quiet… No gunfire. No horses. No livestock. Not even a piano from the saloon.” “Exactly,” the Doctor replies softly. “Come along, Ace. Let’s take a look around.” Windows are boarded. Doors are barred. The saloon stands silent. Lester’s Gulch is not a town at peace - it’s a town holding its breath. At last, movement. A knot of grim-...

“What's your favorite scary movie?”

With Halloween just behind us and Bonfire Night lighting up the skies here in the UK, we decided to take a short break from our ongoing Star Wars campaign to dive into something a little darker. Inspired by one of my all-time favourite horror franchises, we returned to the eerie town of Woodsboro for a Scream-themed game night. For this session, we adapted the Jack the Ripper scenario from Fistful of Lead: Tales of Horror (page 39), swapping out the infamous killer for none other than Ghostface . The objective? Ghostface must stalk the streets and take down five unsuspecting civilians. But it’s not all smooth slashing - there’s a determined team of heroes trying to stop the masked menace before the body count rises! The Protagonists First up: Ghostface. This iconic killer was statted with a chilling combination of traits: Brute : Ghostface has no ranged combat ability, but gains a brutal edge in melee - upgrading their Close Combat die to a d12 . Flurry of Blows : If a Close Co...

The Lost Boys

"The Lost Boys" is a cult classic horror-comedy from 1987, directed by Joel Schumacher. It’s a stylish blend of teen angst, vampire mythology, and rock 'n' roll attitude, all set in the fictional coastal town of Santa Carla, California —a place with a serious vampire problem. After moving to Santa Carla, brothers Michael and Sam Emerson quickly realize the town isn’t just weird - it’s dangerous. Michael gets drawn into a gang of mysterious, leather-clad youths led by the enigmatic David , and after a fateful night involving some suspicious wine (read: vampire blood), he begins to change. Meanwhile, Sam teams up with the eccentric Frog Brothers , self-proclaimed vampire hunters who suspect something sinister is lurking beneath the town’s laid-back vibe. As Michael wrestles with his transformation, Sam and the Frogs race to uncover the truth and save him. The only way to break the curse? Kill the head vampire. But figuring out who that is… well, that’s where things...
