Mission 6 - Scour

With work related interruptions gone, it was time to get back to our Nightwatch campaign. The search for Malicus Crane had led the Pact to a remote region infested with his minions. The subsequent goal is to rind the area of as many of his minions as possible.

Having lost Gimmi the Dwarf last time out, the Pact needed a new team member. A choice was made, and an additional wizard was recruited. Based on a private joke, she was eventually named 'Myamee'. The Pact was supported by 5 D10 hirelings (a mixture of ranged and melee) plus the surviving D10 and D8 ranged hirelings.

Turn 1

Spotting the higher ground in the centre of the table, the Pact split and raced towards it. Minions deployed at spawning points 2 and 3. Due to failed dice rolls, their advance stalled, and they failed to attack the Pact.

Turn 2

Having two wizards in the Pact really started to pay off. Myamee managed to eliminate a number of Wraiths (Terrors) with successive 'Mage Bolts'. Gandwarf successfully cast  'Mancer's Barrier' to stop the earthbound Skeleton Warriors (Horde) from advancing.

Unfortunately, during the spawning stage, some minions deployed in the centre of the table and immediately attacked our Elf melee hirelings, with one dying in the attack.

On the other side of the table, more minions deployed and set after Myamee and Legolan.

Turn 3

Again, the value of having two wizards shone. Myamee used 'Mage Bolt' to eliminate the pursuing minions. Gandwarf used a mixture of 'Mage Bolt' and 'Elemental Fury' to eliminate the skeleton horde that had been trapped behind his mystical barrier.

The forces of darkness did enjoy one success, with some skeleton warriors eliminating another Elf melee hireling.

Turn 4

This was the turn where the dice gods abandoned the Pact. Multiple ranged attacks and spells failed, and it left the forces of darkness to advance unhindered.

Wraiths managed to advance onto the hilltops, eventually engaging Freddo in melee. The brave halfling suffering a wound in the process.

On the other hilltop, a pair of wraiths successfully attacked Myamee, inflicting two wounds on the novice wizard. Would she go the same way as Gimmi in the previous game?

Turn 5

Sensing that momentum was swinging away from the Pact, Legolan took the initiative. Blowing Ruark's Horn, the enemy was stopped in their tracks and Myamee regained a wound. The last surviving Elf hireling leapt into the fray, defeating a wraith in melee. Myamee 'free' moved back and successfully cast 'Mage Bolt' on the last remaining wraith. She then cast a healing spell on herself to heal herself.

Things were looking grim on the other hilltop. Freddo used 'Endless Flash Powder' to move out of melee. He then used a healing potion on himself. Restored to full health, he very carefully threw an 'Explosive Grenade' that succeeded in eliminating some Wraiths.

Gandwarf then did his bit to eliminate a wraith. Unfortunately, one of the ranged hirelings died in a melee with a skeleton warrior.

Turn 6

We were at the stage of the game where it was just wraiths deploying, and they were unhindered by the high ground.

Despite a wound inflicted on Myamee, the dice gods were somewhat favourable this turn, with Legolan managing to avoid injury in a melee and the remaining Elf hireling going toe-to-toe with a wraith.

On the other hilltop, Freddo and Gandalf managed to turn the bad situation around.

Turn 7

The last round of the game, and all the Pact needed to do was survive. The remaining minions had been eliminated. So, with actions left to use, Myamee cast 'Arcane Armour' and 'Healing' on herself.

Failed dice rolls restricted the number of new minions that could attack and with the very last roll of the game, a wraith managed to wound Myamee (even though she has cast 'Arcane Armour').

Given what happened to the Miami Dolphins in the last second of their last two games, this led to Myamee's name. Also, a slight dig at my opponent, who's a big Dolphins fan!

Epilogue

All in all, a defensive game that saw lots of fighting and magic used. The newest member of the Pact having a very good first game, giving Gandwarf a run for his money as the game MVP.

Myamee managed to kill 9 Terrors (Wraiths) and 6 Horde (Skeleton Warriors) and successfully cast 10 spells. Gandwarf came close with 9 Terrors and 8 Horde killed, whilst successfully casting 11 spells.

Freddo the Halfling made up for his performance in the last game, with 4 Terrors and 7 Horde killed. All done whilst consuming 6 potions. Legolan killed 3 Terrors and 1 Horde, but changed the course of the game with his use of Ruark's Horn.

In total, 358 silver was generated by this mission. With only two (d10) hirelings surviving, replacements would have to be purchased.

Next up, Malicus Crane himself!!!
