Kazon Raiders for the Tabletop
I know I post a lot about Star Wars and occasionally Doctor Who on this blog, but my first love has always been Star Trek in all its various forms. Because of that, I'm constantly on the lookout for Star Trek miniatures, and over the years I've accumulated a sizeable collection of bookmarked 3D-print files covering everything from Starfleet officers to obscure alien species from across the franchise.
One of those species is the Kazon, a nomadic and often warlike people from the Delta Quadrant who featured prominently in the early seasons of Star Trek: Voyager. Following the collapse of their former rulers, the Trabe, the Kazon splintered into a number of rival sects, each competing for power, territory, and resources. Their attempts to acquire advanced technology frequently brought them into conflict with Captain Janeway and the crew of Voyager, making them one of the show's earliest recurring adversaries.
Having recently picked up a Bambu FDM 3D printer, I decided it was finally time to start working my way through some of those bookmarked files. First on the print bed were these free Kazon models. The STL files themselves are fairly rough and ready compared to modern sculpting standards, so I felt there was little risk in experimenting with them on an FDM printer rather than saving them for resin.
The results pleasantly surprised me. The entire group printed in around three hours and came out far better than I expected. While the source files aren't packed with fine detail, they captured the distinctive look of the Kazon well enough, and once painted they really came to life.
For the cost of a small amount of filament, a few hours of printing time, and a quick paint job, I ended up with a ready-to-use Kazon warband in less than half a day. That's hard to argue with. They're not display pieces by any means, but for tabletop gaming they do the job perfectly and add another iconic Star Trek faction to the collection.
You can see the results below. I suspect these won't be the last Star Trek miniatures to roll off my printer.
