Mission 5 - Scout (again!)

Reinforced after their last mission, the Pact decided to resume their search for Malicus Crane. This time, the Pact were supported by 4 D10 and 4 D8 Hirelings.

Having experienced failure before doing a search, a different approach was required.

Turn 1

The initial plan was to get the fastest movers (Gandwarf and Legolan) to the furthest corners as quickly as possible, and then complete the required searching. However, both experienced failed rolls and could only move 21".

Elsewhere, Gimme and Freddo would move as fast as they could to the nearest corners. This time, the Hirelings were positioned to protect the primary Pact members from the spawning points.

This strategy worked as two Wraiths (D10) moved to intercept one of our D8 Hirelings. Despite putting up a good fight, the Hireling was defeated by the Wraiths.

Turn 2

Gimme and Freddo managed to scout their respective corners and shifted their attention to helping the other members of the Pact.

Our D10 and D8 Ranged Hirelings took to the high ground to provide covering fire. Unfortunately, arrows had no effect on the enemy.

Turn 3

More success as Gandwarf managed to search another corner. Nevertheless, poor dice rolls meant that was all he could do this turn.

Freddo continued his march across the table to the remaining unsearched corner. However, he finished moving near a spawning point and only poor dice rolls saved him from being attacked.

The Ranged Hirelings on the hill attracted the attention of the Wraiths.

Turn 4

The Ranged Hirelings were assailed from all sides, with the D8 Hireling losing his life. Miraculously, the D10 Hireling resisted all the attacks aimed at her.

Using 'Endless Flash powder', Freddo was able to slip away from the surrounding enemy. Despite this, later on a marauding Wraith managed to successfully attack him.

Turn 5

With one remaining corner left to be scouted, we decided to direct all the Pact members and remaining Hirelings towards it.

Gimme, Freddo and Legolan all took up flanking positions to enable Gandwarf to advance unhindered by the enemy. Dice rolls were against us tonight, and swords and arrows were unable to wound the advancing undead enemy.

Our remaining D10 Ranged Hireling successfully slipped away from the Wraiths attacking her. Her success was short-lived as the Wraiths chased her down.

Disaster struck though! A combination of Wraiths and Skeleton Warriors managed to overwhelm Gimme the Dwarf, and he succumbed to his wounds. The Pact had lost its first member of the campaign.

Turn 6

With Gimme the Dwarf lost, Freddo on 3 wounds and Legolan about to be swamped by the enemy, it was now 'do or die'. Resisting the urge to get to Gimme to cast 'Resurrect Dead', Gandwarf advanced and cast multiple 'Elemental Fury' spells, killing all the enemy defending the last objective. Free moving and then successfully rolling, Gandwarf searched the last objective to win the game for the Pact.

Epilogue

Again, this game was a close run thing. The Pact achieved success where they had failed before, and the change in tactics worked for them. Unfortunately, this success came at a cost of losing Gimme the Dwarf. The first Pact member lost during this campaign. Freddo came close to dying as well, suffering 3 wounds during the course of the game.

Gandwarf was again the star of the game. The dwarf wizard, successfully cast 5 spells, killed 7 Skeleton Warriors and 3 Wraiths. Freddo the Halfling had a quiet game, only succeeding in using 1 potion and had no kills to his name.

Legolan the Elf managed to kill 2 Wraiths with his bow and arrow, and dearly departed Gimme killed 2 Skeleton Warriors.

Returning home, the Pact had gained 129 Silver. This would be used to replace the deceased Hirelings with 5 new D10 Hirelings. 4 tokens were collected and the 'Warhammer of Forte D'Kay' was acquired. All that was left to do was to mourn Gimme the Dwarf and seek his replacement.

RIP, Gimme the Dwarf!
