The Foggy Streets of Chester Falls - A Tales of Horror AAR

In amongst the deep dark woods of New England, evil was stirring. An unearthly fog descended upon the sleepy town of Chester Falls.

The local militia had been roused by a renowned monster hunter Dr Ebenezer Hill. Sensing evil was on the move and armed with his trusty cross, Dr Hill and his men moved to save the town.

Dr Ebenezer Hill leading from the front!

Elsewhere, hiding in the shadows, the feared Necromancer Grilam set forth with the aim of capturing new recruits.

Grilam (right) with his Acolyte.

With the fog limiting visibility to 12", both groups set out. The local militia made first contact with a civilian, strongly recommending that they accompany him home.

"Come with me if want to live!"

On the other side of town, led by the Acolyte, the Undead advanced. Grilam tried in vain to cast a spell from his Ancient Tome.

"Bring out your dead!"
With the civilians randomly stumbling around in the fog, both groups tried to reach them. Not trying another spell, Grilam urged on his undead followers.

"Onward minions!"
Dr Hill spotted a civilian tending a grave in the churchyard and he headed off to save her. Meanwhile the undead Acolyte had manged to locate and subdue one of the townsfolk.

He's behind you!
With three civilians off the table (2 for the Hunters, 1 for the Undead), the groups sought out the remaining civilians. Illuminated by torch light, the Militia advanced through the fog.

"Hello Poppet!"

The town Baker ventured out of his house into the swirling fog. Unfortunately, his ventures led him into the path of a Zombie hoard!

Do you hear something?

With only one civilian left on the table, both sides moved towards her.

"Coming through!"
The previous turn Grilam had successfully cast "Shadow Walk" and had ended up outside the Church facing Dr Hill. The following turn it came down who got the highest card and activated first. Grilam was dealt the King of Spades and used his two turns to cast "Death Bolt" at Dr Hill. The result was spectacular with Dr Hill suffering an 'Out of Fight' result. One of the remaining Militia moved up to secure the civilian from harm.

"I see you!"

With the last civilian off the table, all that was left to do was for the remaining Militiaman to withdraw from the table. Unfortunately for him, the Zombie hoard had caught up with him. Although slow to move and only using a d8 in close combat, the Zombies were able to absorb any blows (Zombies are immune to Shock and Wounds) whilst chomping on the ill fated Militiaman.

"Help me!"

Conclusion.

The Hunters managed to get three civilians off the table, earning 1 RP for each. Unfortunately they inflicted no kills on the Necromancer group. Total 3 RP.
The Necromancer group captured two civilians for 2 RP. Additionally, they put a Hunter and the Hunter leader out of action for another 3 RP. Total 5 RP.

A win for the Necromancer team! This ended up being a very quick game to play, taking less than an hour to complete. The rules build on the existing knowledge we've gained from playing Galactic Heroes and the Tales of Horror expansion capture the genre successfully. What's great is that this set of rules allows me to use some of earliest models in my collection.

We're going to try some more of the scenarios and there's already talk of using the Zombie rules in a 'Walking Dead' based game.

  2. Awesome! Glad it was a great, if short, game.

  3. Well it wasn't that short! Came in just under an hour. More importantly, we had more fun in this game than we've had with longer games.
