This is it, the end of a campaign that had taken just over a year to complete. Malicus Crane had been found hiding in his underground lair.
Gandwarf, Legolan and Freddo all ascended to 'Master' level. This meant that they could respectively recruit (for free) a D10 Familiar companion, a D10 animal companion and an Initiate level Alchemist. On top of this, the Pact had recruited five D10 Hirelings and five D6 Hirelings.
Onwards they ventured.
Turn 1
The aim of this game was simple, eliminate Malicus Crane. The Pact split up, entering the crypt from two different entrances. Both forces used their action dice to cover as much ground as possible and hunt down Malicus Crane.
The forces of evil deployed, with a Wraith (Terror) successfully defeating the animal companion in melee combat. Being a melee powerhouse, Malicus Crane revealed himself, successfully attacking and eliminating a D6 melee hireling. Fortunately, a D10 Elf hireling proved to be more resilient.
Turn 2
With a passageway blocked by a Wraith, Freddo used his 'Endless Flash Powder' to bypass it and advance. For what turned out to be the start of a good night for the non-named characters, a D10 ranged hireling managed to shoot and eliminate the Wraith. This enabled Gandwarf and his force to advance unhindered to the central chamber.
Over with the other force, events got interesting. The D10 Elf hireling managed to inflict a wound on Malicus Crane. This was then followed up by a D6 ranged hireling also hitting and inflicting a wound on Crane. The Necromancer had now lost both his D10 and D8 action dice.
As a result of this, Crane used his remaining D6 action dice to successfully cast 'Arcane Evasion' and retreat. Coupled with his 'free move', he put some distance (and Wraiths) between him and the Pact.
Turn 3
In the central chamber, D6 hirelings held off the attacks from a couple of Wraiths.
Gandwarf spotted Malicus Crane in the passageway. From a distance, the dwarf wizard cast 'Superior Mage Bolt'. The first and second strikes were swatted aside. The third strike successfully hit and Crane was down to his last wound! The fourth and final strike hit, and Crane failed the defence dice roll.
With that, the Necromancer crumbled into dust. The Pact had won.
Well to be totally honest, this concluding mission was very anti-climatic. We were expecting more of a struggle from the protagonist, and this mission ended up being the easiest of the campaign.
We were fortunate to a certain degree that the Wraiths (Terrors) never deployed in sufficient numbers to hold our Pact up, and we were able to cover a lot of ground quickly. Having a single objective was a major bonus, as it enabled us to focus on one thing. Also, we were somewhat fortunate with our dice rolls tonight. Hirelings made dice rolls that ordinarily failed in previous missions, and we only lost two hirelings in total.
Off the named Pact members, Freddo killed two Wraiths and used four grenadoes. Gandwarf only cast two spells but managed to kill Malicus Crane. Similarly, Myamee only cast two spells and killed one Wraith.
So what next for the Pact? That remains to be seen, but for now, a well-earned flagon of ale in the pub would be a good start.
